Discovering exhilaration and excitement in painting at the elementary-school age, Klaus Gehrig began selling larger oil paintings on a regular basis by age 14. He has continued to do artwork throughout his life.

Born in 1946 in Bavaria, Germany, he has been a part of the Canadian scene since his teens. In 1977 he and Marie-José, a waitress in a "staring artist" restaurant in Vancouver, built a 30-foot sail ship and embarked on a voyage around the globe.Life on the ocean and his long-standing affair with art well quailifed him for scrimshanding, the "sailor's art" (innumerable people around the world own a Gehrig scrimshaw).

Gehrig's marine paintings in oil, acrylic, and multimedia, attempt to capture some of the infinite moods of the ocean environment. The majority of his works leave the viewer wit ha sense of motion.

His works have found their way to France, Uk, USA, Germany,... and of course, to numerous collectors, art lovers, schools...within Canada.

Klaus Gehrig's and Marie-José Hersir's round-the-world sailing voyage inspired the book "Taking a Little Sailing Ship", Nimbus Pub. 1991
A novel, "The Eyes of the Roof", was published in 2001 by AmErica House.

Gehrig has also illustrated the cookbook "Healthy & Simple", put together several marine colouring books, written and illustrated the marine story/colouring book "Baby Long-Jaw", a booklet on scrimshanding, and a manual on celestial navigation.
